During a Special Meeting on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, the Sweeny ISD Board of Trustees voted unanimously to pause the ongoing search for a new superintendent. This decision was made in light of several important developments currently underway across the district. 

Ongoing and upcoming construction projects funded by the District’s bonds, the active search for a new High School Principal, and the desire to maintain consistency and continuity heading into the new school year were all significant factors in this decision. With recent transitions already impacting the District, the Board believes it is essential to prioritize a smooth and successful start to the school year for Sweeny ISD students and staff.

The Board emphasizes that this decision was not influenced by the applicant pool, as Trustees have not reviewed applications or received any information about candidates.

Mrs. Terri Watkins will continue to serve as Interim Superintendent during this period of transition. The Board expressed full confidence in Mrs. Watkins leadership and her dedication to the students, staff, and community of Sweeny ISD.

“We feel that it is important for our district to have consistency,” said Board President Bryan Douget. “Mrs. Watkins served as interim during our previous superintendent search and is familiar with our district. We value her lengthy background in education and feel confident this is the right decision.”
